Apartment or Condo Hurricane Safety Tips

Provide Emergency Leadership!

Select a building leader who has some knowledge of
hurricane preparedness and choose floor captains
to help instruct the residents on how to prepare for a hurricane.

Locate a safe area for residents to congregate,
preferably an interior hallway away
from windows or sliding glass doors.

Locate all exit stairways.
Determine a location outside of the building for members of
family to meet if you are asked to evacuate.

Prepare Apartments For The Storm!

Remove all loose items from terrace or patio,
such as hanging plants, lanterns, lawn furniture, etc.
Bring the items indoors so they do not become projectiles.

Secure the patio & sliding glass doors. Close all shutters.

Place a wedge in the top part of patio doors to
Prevent them from being lifted up & into your apartment.

If you "are not" in an evacuated zone:

Unless you are ordered to evacuate,
you may choose to remain in the building.
Stay in a room with few or no windows.
Make provisions for sheltering other people
Who may be trapped by the approaching storm.

If you "are" in an evacuation zone:

Arrange to stay with a relative or friend outside the evacuation area.
Go to the nearest American Red Cross refuge (shelter)
after the opening times have been announced on the news.

If you are in need of transportation:

If you are elderly, ill or handicapped,
and you need transportation, assistance

Phone 954 -357-6402 at the start of the
Hurricane Season to register for assistance.
If a Hurricane is already on its way,
call this number as soon as possible

to let them know that you need help.
